Pioneering Azerbaijan Expedition

from

Azerbaijan shares its border with Georgia, Russia, Iran and Armenia. It stretches from the Great Caucasus Mountains in the north to the hilly, picturesque Hirkan National Park and the Talysh Mountains in the South. It is the only country in the entire Caucasus chain where you can encompass the southern and northern slopes; therefore, be ready to be amazed by its beauty.

The core of our expedition’s itinerary is the self-sufficient horse-back trek amid the Great Caucasus Mountains. During our journey, we will ride overpasses, on crests, high plateaus, between mountains lakes, and through pristine forests and wild rivers. We will be accompanied by the local Lezgian people, who are very familiar with the incredible Ismaili National Park. Our goal is to reach Xinalig, which is a Qetish village where locals speak an endemic language.

Horses are the only way of transportation in the mountains. We will choose our route every day in accordance with the weather, pathways and snow conditions. Hence, each day will be an adventure, and each trip will offer a new itinerary.

The trip will offer a vibrant mix of nature and culture. You will also experience different kinds of ecosystems and landscapes: from the green mountains to the volcanic desert.

We will finish the trip by travelling overnight on an old Soviet train to Tbilisi. This city is the beautiful and charming capital of Georgia. Tbilisi is a vibrant and hospitable city; therefore, you will feel at home due to local hospitality. Coming from Azerbaijan, you will be reminded of Europe, with its cobbled streets and small, beautiful houses. After spending some time, you will observe the middle-eastern influences. You will get an entire day (24 hours) to learn about Tbilisi’s history, architecture and the Georgian lifestyle. In the process, you will discover the differences and similarities between these two former Soviet countries of the Caucasus region.

According to some researchers, it may belong to the northern caucasian languages branch.

Horses are the only way of transportation in the mountains, not only for people but also for different kinds of material, such as wood, stones, etc. We will choose our route every day in accordance with the weather, pathways and snow conditions. The contrast between the old and the new in the form of Baku’s ancient heritage its modern buildings and the pristine natural beauty, as opposed to the former oil industries.

  1. Day 1 Arrive Baku

    Arrival in Baku

If you arrive during the day, you must arrange your own meals. But this rarely happens, as all the flights usually arrive late in the evening.

Your overnight stay will be arranged in a comfortable hotel in the very center of Baku.

  2. Day 2 Visit Baku

In Baku, you will get the chance to visit the city’s old centre and explore its alleys, mosques and palaces, before visiting the imposing mansions of the city’s 19th century oil barons.

We will visit the double arches of the Fortress Wall constructed by King Manoucher II (1120-1159). The wall encircles the most ancient part of Baku called ”Ichari Sha-har” (Inner City) and preserves the image of a medieval Oriental citadel that has been reconstructed.

Inside we will see the extraordinary architecture of the 15th century Royal Palace of ShirvanShahs (Kings of Shirvan) that was constructed in 1435-1442 by King Khalil; the Ga-simbey bath house, the public bath house dating back to the 17th century; and the Ismayiliye Palace, a beautiful edifice in Venetian Gothic style built by oil baron Agha Musa Naghiyev (1849-1919). We will also have a look at the modern building of SOCAR from where we can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the market place.

After this, you can either visit the carpet museum/Alyiev Foundation or stroll around the city. Dinner will be arranged in a restaurant, following which you will stay overnight in a hotel.

  3. Day 3 Baku-Sheki-Cticu

Before heading deep into the mountains, we will drive up north along the Caucasus range. We will explore the village of Kish, which is home to the oldest church in the Caucasus called The Church of Kish or The Church of St Elishe.
On the way, we will have a quick lunch at some diner or restaurant.

Next, we will go to Sheki, an important centre on the Trans-Caucasian trade routes. It was an independent Khanate until the 1820s. Inside the Sheki Khan fortress, the Sheki Khan summer residence that was built in 1797, is the only remaining structure from the larger palatial complex. There are also a number of old caravanserais and mosques to explore.

Overnight, we will stay in a guesthouse in the area.

  4. Day 4 to Day 10 Horseback Trekking

We will start our horseback trip from Ictitcyl, which is a Lesgien village populated originally by an ethnic group from Dagestan, Russia. The natives speak a language that has its roots in the Caucasian language, unlike the the Azerbaijani language that has

Turkish-Mongol roots. The area we will ride in is a National Park and a restricted nature reserve that has an unspoiled environment. As there is neither a road nor a trekking path, we will be plunged in the wilderness. Be aware that from here onwards, and for the remainder of the trek, you won’t have any phone connectivity.

The horses are mountain horses of a local Caucasian race that is very well-tempered, calm and tough. They are not big, have incredible balance and know their job. Skillful and smart, they also know how to save their own energy. The camps are located deep in the valley and offer amazing locales.

Our first day on horseback leads us to a base camp that is located in the middle of a restricted nature reserve and national park hidden in the mountains. We ride upward on the river bed and through some beautiful forests.

From the camp, we will decide the next 3 days’ journey based on the weather and mountain conditions. So, we might ride for the day and return to the camp or ride for 2-3 days with tents and equipment. Ideally, we should keep moving for 2-3 days; so, you should be prepared to travel. If we do travel, we will stay in tents for the night.

The journey will provide us many possibilities, such as riding 3000-metres high on a plateau, by some beautiful lakes, on crests, over passes, and through beautiful forests.

We will ride from basecamp 1 to basecamp 2 that is also located in an amazing setting. From there, it will take us 3-4 days to reach our final destination, Lahic, which is a very old village built by the Tat people. These people are originally from Iran or Afghanistan and speak a Persian dialect.

On the way, we will stay overnight in another very beautiful camp surrounded by the Babadag summit, which is one of the highest mountains in Azerbaidjan. From there, it would be possible to have round trips of one or two days, depending on the remaining time we have. The horseback trip will end in Lahic on day 10.

Throughout the trek, you will be sustained by, and enjoy, the delicious Azerbaidjan and Lezgian cuisines.

  5. Day 11 Lahic-Baku

We will spend some time in Lahic village, exploring its beautiful, cobbled streets and its medieval water supply and sewage systems, as well as the traditional workshops that specialize in making jewelry, copper-ware, carpets, pottery, daggers, and iron tools.

In the middle of the afternoon, we will drive back to Baku, where we shall eat in a restaurant and stay in a 4-star hotel for the night.

  6. Day 12 Baku-Qobustan-Apsheron Peninsula-Baku

Gobustan is a national historical landmark that is located in the south-west of Baku in the middle of ravines in a desert landscape. It got its name from the word ‘Gobu’, which means ravines in Azerbaijani. Gobustan is an archeologically-rich site, with more than 6,000 rock engravings that are 5,000 – 40,000 years old.

The site was also a cave-dweller city. Most of the rock engravings depict primitive men, animals, battle-pieces, ritual dances, bullfights, boats with armed oarsmen, warriors with lances in their hands, camel caravans, and the sun and stars.

Next, we will visit the mud volcanoes and have an alfresco (open air) lunch.

Following this, we will drive back to Baku and visit the suburbs of the Absheron Peninsula.

We will drive to the old petroleum industry plants; the Ateshgah temple in Surakhany village where the Zoroastrians travelled thousands of kilometers to worship fire coming out of the earth, and the Yanardag Mountain where natural gas has been burning for several thousand years.
We will have an early dinner at Baku and then take the Soviet-era night train back to Tbilisi at 21:00.

  7. Day 13 Tbilisi

We will arrive in Tbilisi in the morning. After breakfast, we will visit the old center of Tbilisi, to look at its architecture and historical places.

While the city is different from Baku, there are similarities as well that I will help you identify and appreciate.

Our final dinner together will be in a restaurant, following which your stay will be arranged in a 3 or 4-star hotel in Tbilisi. This will also conclude your trip.

  8. Day 14 Depart

    Drop at the airport.

    ADDITIONAL OPTIONS FOR AZERBAIJAN:

You can take the flight back from Baku and extend your trip to visit Xinalig, the Qetish village.

    ADDITIONAL OPTIONS FOR GEORGIA:

It is highly recommend that you stay one more day exploring Tbilisi, which will be definitely worth your time.

Accommodation

5 nights in ¾-star hotels in the very center of Baku and Tbilisi; 60 euros will be charged extra for every additional single room/night (possible only in Baku and Tbilisi); 2 nights-stay in family guesthouses in Lahic and Sheki; during the horseback expedition, stay will be arranged either in tents or camps; in Sheki, stay could be arranged in a 3-star hotel.

  • Given the precarious weather conditions and the difficult terrain in which your luggage will be carried, we will not be responsible for some damages that might occur.
  • Lunches will often be in the open air.
  • We will enjoy some very typical Azerbaijan meals. If you follow a special diet, please bring your own substitutes (except for the vegetarian fare, as we can find a lot of vegetables, cheese and fruits on the way).
  • The program is provisional until you have booked your flight. If you decide to come before or leave after the program, we can arrange some bookings for you.
  • Sometimes, your overnight stay might be in guesthouses run by local families. The conditions here are different from those in Europe. Such treks and expeditions allow some families to make a living by letting out their homes. This is also an opportunity for you to approach the local people and learn about their traditions and customs. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary that you follow the local rules, even if they seem odd to you at times. Your lack of respect for local customs and traditions might badly impact the relations between foreigners and locals and have some bad consequences for tourism.
  • As this might be your first horse-back expedition, don’t expect the journey to be quite comfortable.
  • We reserve the right to modify the itinerary, if we have to for any reasons. This decision will be taken by the main guide and should not be contradicted or disputed. We will replace the itinerary by another one in the best way possible.
  • Full boarding, except the free meals described in the program

Visas

British nationals don’t need a visa to enter Georgia for visits of up to 1 year. If you wish to stay for longer, you’ll need to apply for a long term visa. Contact the Embassy of Georgia in London or visit the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for more details on entry requirements.

If you’re living in Georgia you should contact the Justice House or Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia for advice.

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. No additional period of validity beyond this is required.

Travelling with medicines

Georgia has a very strict anti-drugs policy, which can also cover prescription and non-prescription drugs or medicines, otherwise commonly available in the UK and the European Union. For example, non-prescription medicines containing codeine are illegal in Georgia. This can cause serious problems for travellers and in some cases lead to administrative and criminal proceedings. Before travelling, check Georgia’s medication importation regulations on the Ministry of Health website

If you intend to travel with prescription medicine, you must carry a doctor’s prescription and ideally the original packaging. See Health

Visas

British nationals travelling to Azerbaijan are usually required to get a visa in advance. Specific conditions apply, see the Azerbaijan Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for further details.

A simplified online visa system was introduced in January 2017. You can make an application on the Asan Visa website. Electronic visas are valid for 30 days and are single entry. You won’t be able to extend an electronic visa once you’ve arrived in Azerbaijan. The website also has an “urgent” option which provides a quicker service for an extra fee. Electronic visas cannot be issued to persons travelling on Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs).

You can still apply for a visa through the Azerbaijan Embassy-affiliated Visa Service Centre in the UK. You should apply for a visa at least one month ahead of your intended travel date. See the Visa Centre website for more information.

Make sure you check the duration of your visa immediately to avoid overstaying unintentionally. Your visa should be valid when departing Azerbaijan. In exceptional circumstances you may be able to apply to the State Migration Service for an extension to your visa. Their address is 202 Binagadi Highway, 3123 Block, Binagadi district, Baku city, AZ1114, Azerbaijan Republic; telephone +994 (0)12 562 56 23 or +994 (0)12 562 57 73; e-mail info@migration.gov.az

Alternatively, try the Migration Information Centre: telephone: 919 (in country calls only)

You can extend a visa by up to 60 days through the State Migration Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

If you overstay you can obtain an ‘Exit Permit’ letter (an official letter giving permission to leave Azerbaijan within 48 hours) from the State Migration Service before you depart. You will be liable to a fine of between AZN300 to AZN400 (you should get a receipt).

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months when you enter Azerbaijan.

UK Emergency Travel Documents

UK Emergency Travel Documents are accepted for entry, airside transit and exit from Azerbaijan.

Registration

If you’re staying in Azerbaijan for longer than 15 days you must register with the State Migration Service within 15 days of arrival by either visiting the State Migration Service in person or online. Hotels may provide this service for their guests, but visitors staying in apartments or private residences will have to register by themselves. Each traveller is responsible for ensuring that the registration has been completed.

Those staying longer than 30 days can either apply to extend their visa on compassionate grounds or will need to obtain a temporary residence card. For more information refer to the State Migration Service.

Dual nationals

Azerbaijan doesn’t allow adults (18 years or older) to hold dual nationality. You may be refused entry, denied departure or even face criminal liability if you’re 18 years or older and are found to be holding both an Azerbaijani passport and a passport of a different nationality. If you’re a British passport holder with links to Azerbaijan (through birth or otherwise) and wish to check your nationality status contact the State Migration Service before you travel. Children under 18 years old holding a second nationality shouldn’t face any difficulties.
