Nepal as a holiday destination is plain fantastic. A kingdom steeped in history and dominated by the majestic Himalayas, it enthralls all who enter.

One of the best ways to explore and discover this remarkable land is to get away from the towns and roads and embark on a trekking and rafting adventure – the snows of Kanchenjunga feed the less known, but very spectacular tributary of the Sun Kosi, the Tamur which offers amazing mountain views with an exhilarating river journey!

The trek is one of the most spectacular in Nepal, one which our clients agree, makes this trip unique, with outstanding views of Kanchenjunga and Makalu. This is truly a river journey with it all!

  1. Day 1 Arrive to Kathmandu

Most international flights arrive early afternoon in Kathmandu. You will be met by your Trip Leader who will escort you by private vehicle to your hotel in the heart of Thamel. The remainder of the day is yours to explore this wonderful destination, or perhaps catch up with some rest after your journey.

Not included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  2. Day 2 Flight From Kathmandu to Biratnagar

We get up early and transfer you to the airport again for a short but scenic flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar….. believe us, you will appreciate flights in this country as a far superior option to bus travel! After a filling lunch beside the river in Mulghat, we drive to the bustling market town of Basantapur. Here you’ll stay in basic lodgings, with wonderful hosts. Sitting in the kitchen whilst dhal bhat is prepared is the place to be!

    Included: All meals

  3. Day 3 Explorer Eastern Nepal

We will awake to the sounds of a market town in Eastern Nepal, enjoy breakfast, and watch in awe as our expedition moves through the moss covered Rhododendron Forests towards the river. This is a truly great way to get to know other members of our group as we walk towards the majestic Tamur. We spend the first night camped near the village of Chauki where we should (weather permitting) have amazing views of the mountains in the morning.

    Included: All meals

  4. Day 4 to 6 Explorer Nepal and Cross Lake at Gufa Pokhara

We have a great breakfast and start our walk each day, stopping in beautiful shady tree clad meadows for lunch. It is quite a sight to see a rather small Nepali chap, clad in meager attire including flip flops, carrying an 50 kilogram cooler box to the river attached to him by little more than a narrow head strap. Do not try this at home! We summit a 10,000 foot pass above the sacred lake at Gufa Pokhara and we are rewarded with some stunning views of Kanchenjunga, Makalu and many other Himalayan peaks. We descend through terraced rice paddies and friendly villages, being greeted by locals with “Namaste” as we see the river snaking its way in the distance. Most people let out a hoot of relief and joy when they finally see the Tamur and dive in for a quick dip in the river, as a seemingly endless trail of energetic porters bring in the equipment.

    All meals included Day 4-6

  5. Day 7 to 10 Explorer Dhoban

At Dhoban, three tributaries of the Tamur join their forces, combining the racing rivers of the high mountains to the north. In early fall, the rapids on the Tamur are unrivaled. This river is a whitewater delight with one rapid leading into the next. Many rapids are as yet unnamed… maybe your chance for some fame!

Steep canyon walls enclose the river and the rapids are powerful and continuous. In the middle section, the river opens up and there are beautiful white sandy beaches. Small fisherman’s villages line the confluence of every major tributary, while wild monkey’s watch from the jungle as we drift past. Local people are a fascinating collage of tribes and castes that have perfected the brewing of their local drink, Tungba, to a fine art.

The last few days where the river turns back to the west is phenomenal. Towering waves leap skyward, with seemingly endless rapids surging through steep canyon walls, to finally cascade into the Sun Kosi.

We inflate the boats and give you a comprehensive safety talk before putting on the river and drift for a very short time (only around twenty minutes) before we get to camp. It truly is a fantastic feeling to be out there, self sufficient, while floating down the Tamur watching the different shades of hue as the sun disappears over the horizon.

    All Meals Included Days 7-10

  6. Day 12 Rafting in Terai & back to Kathmandu

As we approach the heat of the Indian Terai, it is great to get up very early on the last morning and have a floating breakfast as we watch the sun rise over the hills. Chatara marks the end of the rafting journey and it is quite a shock to the system to hear bus horns and screaming children breaking the tranquility that we have become so accustomed to over the past ten days. We pack all our equipment onto the top of the bus and then catch our afternoon flight back to Kathmandu….. the bus “enjoys” a bumpy 12 hour ride!

    Included: Breakfast and lunch

  7. Day 13 Back to the Airport

After a rather leisurely breakfast and chat about the trip we take you back to the airport for your return flight.

  8. Day 13 to 15 (Optional)

Staying at the luxurious Tiger Tops Camp is a great way to finish off your trip. Set in the heart of the Royal Chitwan National Park you have some fantastic opportunities to see the prolific bird life, not to mention occasional sightings of the Royal Bengal Tiger, rhinos, elephants and an amazing array of other wildlife.

Naturalists are on hand with their seemingly endless supply of knowledge to answer your queries regarding all the species of animal in the park. The lodge is made entirely of local materials and blends in beautifully with the environment. There are a range of activities to enjoy from elephant safaris to jungle walks, to just plain old relaxing in the serene surroundings of the Lodge.

Meals are all inclusive and are a wonderful combination of Western and Nepali dishes. Accommodation is in spacious safari tents with twin beds and separate hot and cold showers. Since you do have to book in advance we strongly recommend that you try and think how you will feel at the end of the river journey and decide if returning to Kathmandu will really be the option that you will want!

On day fourteen we transfer you to Bharatpur Airport (about 1 hour away) where you will meet with your return flight to Kathmandu. That afternoon we suggest that you spend some time doing some well deserved retail therapy.

A group farewell dinner is always welcomed and it is a final chance to relive the previous two weeks with people that do believe you when you explain just how big that rapid was!!!

    All meals included

  9. Day 16 (With Chitwan Option)

After a rather leisurely breakfast and chat about the trip we take you back to the airport for your return flight.

    Included: Breakfast

Accommodation

For 2 nights before the trekking and rafting and 1 night after your trip, you’ll be staying in a hotel sharing with a fellow adventurer from your trip. If you have a request regarding who you are sharing with, please inform our office. If our trip ends up with odd numbers nobody will be charged a Single Supplement, however if this is requested there will be an additional charge of £220. On the river portion of the trip, you’ll also be sharing a tent with a fellow rafter. You can request a single tent for a small additional charge.

You will be able to leave any clothing or baggage that you don’t require on the river at your Hotel whilst you are on the river and collect this again when you get off your trip. All valuables will be locked and kept in the hotel safe. Please do not take valuables such as passports, money, credit cards and flight tickets on the river with you on the river!

Most of our clients are aware that adventure travel to far flung lands can pose it’s own interesting idiosyncrasies common in the developing world. Very few things happen fast, and you’ll find a smiling face and a little patience work wonders in these countries for getting things accomplished. We suggest you read the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise on the country you are visiting prior to your departure. We recommend a few phrases of the local language will get you a long way (this is sent to you in your pre departure pack).

Our trip leaders are on hand if you have any queries about the country you are visiting.

On receipt of your payment balance and booking form, we’ll send you a suggested equipment list. If you require some of the items suggested for your trip, we can organise this for you.

An adequate insurance policy is required to cover you whilst white water rafting. This must also include medical evacuation and repatriation in the unlikely event you are injured on your trip.

As most aspects of your trip are taken care of, the money you will need to bring will be limited. We suggest getting a small amount of Nepalese Rupees once in country to pay for beers on the trek and any other incidental costs. We recommend travelling with a small amount of Dollars or Pound Sterling in small denominations. (10, and 20 notes are good) ATM facilities are available at this destination.

What better way of travelling down a river than by your own paddle power and gravity? We take great care of the environment we visit and carry out all our waste that we take on trips. We keep groups small to not impact the environment and to give you the chance to chat with all the interesting people on your trip.

On many of our departures we take along a trip cameraman w ho will capture your trip through their eyes. This will capture not only you paddling through white water, but have local wildlife, scenic shots and the adventures around camp.

These can be ordered in destination. When edited, they will be put to music and enclosed in the DVD case for your memory. The cost of this will be approximately $150 – $200

You will need a visa to travel to Nepal.

To apply for a visa in the United Kingdom you should contact the Embassy of Nepal, 12A, Kensington Palace Gardens, London, W8 4QU (telephone: +20 7229 1594 or 6231 or 5352).

Visas are available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport and at some land borders. To obtain a visa upon arrival by air in Nepal you must fill in an application form on arrival and provide a passport photograph. A single-entry visa valid for 15, 30 or 90 days costs US$25, 40 or 100. At Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan Airport the fee is payable in any major currency (some land crossings insist on payment in US dollars), Children under 10 require a visa but are not charged a visa fee. A Nepali visa is valid for entry for three to six months from the date of issue.

If you wish to stay for more than 60 days you can extend your visa up to 30 days by applying to the Nepali Department of Immigration at Kalikasthan, Kathmandu (telephone: +977 1 4429659).

Multiple-entry visas are useful if you are planning travel to Tibet, Bhutan or India. You can change your single-entry visa to a multiple-entry visa at Kathmandu’s Central Immigration Office for US$20.

You must have a valid visa in your passport to leave Nepal. If your visa has expired you will have to arrange an extension at the Department of Immigration, before your departure.

Overstaying without authority is serious. Foreign nationals who overstay in Nepal without a valid visa are subject to (i) a fine of up to 50,000 Nepali Rupees, and/or (ii) deportation from Nepal. Approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs is required for deportation, which could be a lengthy process. The immigration office may take the foreign national in its custody (detain) until the decision is made by the Ministry of Home Affairs. For more information, please contact Nepal Immigration.
